Online Journalism

Online journalism

Dan has significant experience in the culture and work demands unique to online journalism, from the need to break news at lightning speed while maintaining accuracy to the growing ability to engage an audience and build a readership through promotion unlike ever before. At both PolitickerPa.com and his new venture pa2010.com, Dan has successfully and consistently broken news first while also taking the important time to build coverage that is expansive and enlightening. Below is only the smallest sampling of his work in online journalism.

During his time at The Bulletin, Dan developed extensive beat coverage in several areas, while also working on general assignment.

Dan’s coverage of SEPTA and the Philadelphia Parking Authority, in particular, illustrate his ability to thoroughly contextualize subjects for readers unfamiliar with the development of stories over time and explain complex, interrelated issues.

Features

Features

Despite typically producing 2-3 stories a day at The Bulletin, Dan still found the time to regularly write features, a literary pursuit that is one of his most enjoyable exploits.

Many of those stories were cover features for the newspaper’s weekend edition. A writer who can mix flair and clarity, few things give Dan more joy that a nice features assignment.

Enterprise

Enterprise

Dan believes it is the role of journalism to shine light where there is none. To take readers where they could not or would not go themselves. To aggressively explore sensitive but critical issues in society.

With few opportunities over the years to really devote weeks at a time to one story, Dan has still seized upon every chance that has presented itself to peel away layers of a story.

He did this most recently—and most effectively—with a two-part series highlighting deficiencies of the domestic division of Philadelphia’s family court system. A segment of the judiciary lacking in transparency, it had seldom been touched upon by the media before Dan.

This series—as well as the Reporter’s Notebook packaged with part one—demonstrates Dan’s ability to relentlessly pursue the facts, to uncover what is hidden with determination, to never take no for an answer when it comes to access, and to relay his discoveries to readers in ways that are both engaging and enlightening. The series won a state Associated Press award for enterprise journalism.
